Russia/CIS market is one of the world’s leading in terms of box office, D-Cinema roll-out and new multiplex construction growth.
Russian/CIS box office growth in recent years has been nothing but phenomenal: for the third consecutive year total gross is over 1 billion USD (1,267 in 2012), which kept Russia advancing in world’s top 10 largest cinema markets.
The new multiplex annual growth rate is very encouraging, with almost 500 new screens opened in Russia in 2012! There are over 3150 modern screens in operation in Russia alone, not counting CIS countries, where new multiplex growth rate is even higher.
But it is the D-Cinema roll-out, which is the most exciting fact about Russian film exhibition. Over 65% of all modern screens in Russia are now digital/3D. The majority of cinema sites now operate D-Cinema screens (over 2000 to date). There were only about 350 D-Cinema screens in the beginning of 2010!
KINO EXPO is the main event for D-Cinema in Russia and neighboring countries. Russian exhibition and distribution willingly embraced D-Cinema, resulting in thousands of installations in various regions and numerous D-Cinema releases. Russian film exhibition continues D-Cinema roll-out in 2013! In September 2011, due to lobbying efforts by KinoAlliance, the Russian cinema exhibitors’ association, the 15% customs duty on D-Cinema projectors was reduced to 0%, effective in the countries of Eurasian Economic Commonwealth – Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and Belarus. This makes it easier for cinemas to finalize D-Cinema roll-out.
